From Teen Struggles to Raising Standards: How Emma Loker Built PsychWrite to Fix Mental Health Misinformation Online

Emma Loker knows what it feels like to be a teenager searching for answers and finding nothing you can trust. Growing up, she navigated social anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts largely without support - not because help didn't exist, but because she didn't have easy access to accurate information or even the language to understand what she was experiencing. She didn't seek support until much later.

That gap stayed with her. Years on, training as a Child and Adolescent Therapist and working as a mental health writer, she kept noticing the same problem from the other side: the internet had become one of the first places people turned when struggling with their mental health, yet much of what they found was oversimplified, clinically uninformed, or outright harmful. And the professionals best placed to change that - therapists, private practices, mental health organisations - often lacked the marketing and SEO expertise to reach the people who needed them most.

Emma founded PsychWrite to close that gap. The clinical mental health marketing agency works with private practices and mental health organisations on SEO, content, website copy, Google Ads, and psychoeducational resources - with every piece produced by writers who hold a mental health background. In this interview, she shares what shaped her mission, the problem she's building toward solving, and what's next - including a book co-authored with Reebok founder Joe Foster, a Substack academy for mental health writers, and a UK Startup Awards 2026 shortlist.

What inspired you to start?

I started PsychWrite because of my own experiences growing up and the gap I later noticed while training to become a Child and Adolescent Therapist.

As a teenager, I struggled with social anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts, but I didn’t have easy access to reliable mental health information or the language to fully understand what I was experiencing. I often felt incredibly alone, and because of that, I didn’t seek support until much later.

Years later, while training to become a therapist and working as a mental health writer, I quickly realised there were very few mental health professionals combining clinical expertise with a knowledge of mental health marketing, content and SEO. Yet, there was a huge demand for this.

More and more people were turning to the internet for support and answers, yet much of the information available was oversimplified, inaccurate or potentially harmful. I wanted to change that.

I couldn’t meet the demand alone, so I started PsychWrite - a clinical mental health marketing agency, with a writing team made up entirely of experienced writers with a mental health background.

From the beginning, the goal has been to raise the standard of mental health communication online and make accurate, compassionate information accessible to people when they need it most. To do this, we help mental health organisations improve their marketing, content and SEO, making them more visible to prospective clients and encouraging those clients to reach out for support.

What problem are you solving?

PsychWrite exists to solve the growing problem of mental health misinformation online, and we do this in several ways.

The internet has become one of the first places people turn when they are struggling with their mental health. However, much of the information available is created without clinical expertise (and sometimes with AI!), which can leave people less likely to seek support or feeling more judged and ashamed.

We address this by ensuring that every marketing campaign and piece of content we produce is created by writers with a mental health background. This means the information is not only accessible and engaging, but also clinically informed, accurate and safe.

We support mental health organisations with SEO-driven blog content, digital marketing strategies, website copy, Google Ads, and psychoeducational resources. This helps them reach people at the exact moments they are searching for help, whether that is on Google, social media or their own platforms. Our work increases their visibility and ensures that what people find is helpful and responsible.

What's next for you?

Right now, we’re focused on helping mental health organisations and private practices support vulnerable people through ethical, evidence-based marketing, content and SEO.

We’re currently developing a program (which I can’t share too much about) that will help people identify trustworthy, evidence-based mental health content online. The goal is to make it easier for everyone to know what information they can trust when searching for support.

We’ve also recently launched PsychWrite Academy on Substack, helping mental health writers build their skills and ensure their writing is ethical, compassionate and helpful.

Alongside this, I’m co-authoring a book with Joe Foster, the Founder of Reebok, which will amplify conversations around mental health and entrepreneurship.

We’ve been shortlisted for the UK Startup Awards 2026 in the Advertising and Marketing category, and we’re looking forward to the regional finals in June, followed by the national finals in September.

Over the past two years, I’ve also built a LinkedIn audience of almost 14,000 followers by speaking openly about mental health misinformation and encouraging higher standards across the industry. In April 2026, I was named the #1 UK mental health LinkedIn creator by Favikon and #14 worldwide. I’m excited to continue growing and connecting with others in this space.
