Today, as the founder of Path, Mariah has transformed her early struggles with plant-based eating into a mission to help others not just survive, but truly thrive on a plant-powered lifestyle.

1. At Path, you specialize in plant-based health coaching and nutrition. What inspired you to focus specifically on helping people transition to a plant-based lifestyle, and what are the most common challenges you see clients face during this transformation?

My journey into plant-based health coaching is profoundly personal. At 14, I chose to become a vegetarian, yet without family support or adequate information at the time, I inadvertently adopted a diet heavily reliant on refined and processed carbohydrates, which unfortunately led to early health challenges. This experience propelled me to understand how to not just survive, but genuinely thrive on a plant-based diet. Today, with an increase in reliable information and the growing embrace of this lifestyle for diverse reasons—from personal health and ethical considerations to environmental stewardship—my mission at Path feels clearer than ever. I am deeply inspired by the transformative power of plant-based living, recognizing its immense benefits not only for individual physical health and overall well-being but also for its positive global impact. Many individuals are curious about this path yet feel lost or intimidated, often burdened by the misconception that it is restrictive or complicated when, in reality, it is incredibly abundant and empowering. My purpose is to bridge that gap, guiding clients through a positive, sustainable transition and helping them navigate common challenges such as information overload, social pressures, cravings, logistical hurdles in meal planning, and any lingering concerns about nutritional adequacy, regardless of what initially inspired their journey.

2. Many people feel overwhelmed by conflicting information about plant-based nutrition and struggle with persistent cravings or social pressures. How do you help clients overcome these obstacles and develop the confidence to make informed nutritional choices?

At Path, my approach is firmly centered on empowering clients through comprehensive education, practical strategies, and unwavering support to effectively navigate the noise of conflicting information. I provide clear, evidence-based nutrition fundamentals, demystifying common concerns and establishing a strong foundation of understanding that enables clients to make informed dietary choices with confidence. We strategically address cravings by exploring their root causes and developing personalized, sustainable techniques, thereby shifting the focus from sheer willpower to effective, actionable tools. Navigating social pressure is a significant hurdle, and we practice graceful communication strategies for family meals and dining out, always emphasizing the abundance and joy inherent in plant-based eating rather than any sense of restriction. Ultimately, I guide clients to cultivate intuitive eating and self-trust, moving beyond rigid rules to genuinely listen to their bodies and make choices that truly nourish them, ensuring they emerge as their own most confident and informed health advocates. 

3. Your approach emphasizes developing lasting healthy habits that support long-term wellness rather than quick fixes. What's your philosophy on creating sustainable change, and how do you empower clients to maintain their plant-powered lifestyle beyond your coaching program?

My philosophy at Path on creating sustainable change is rooted in the belief that true transformation is not about deprivation or temporary efforts; it's about integration, enjoyment, and self-compassion. We are not aiming for a finish line; rather, we are building a vibrant, lifelong journey. Quick fixes rarely address the underlying behaviors and beliefs that contribute to unhealthy patterns, which inevitably leads to rebounds. Sustainable change, conversely, involves building a strong foundation, brick by brick, that consistently prioritizes genuine enjoyment and lasting well-being. I empower clients to maintain their plant-powered lifestyle beyond our coaching program by focusing on small, incremental shifts and personalized enjoyment. We establish new habits by thoughtfully integrating them into existing routines and optimizing their environment. My role is to guide, not dictate, helping clients develop robust self-efficacy and problem-solving skills so they can confidently navigate challenges independently. We ensure they conclude the program with a comprehensive toolkit of resources and a deep understanding that self-compassion and flexibility are crucial for long-term adherence. Ultimately, we reinforce their intrinsic "why," connecting daily choices to their deeper values for powerful, enduring motivation.
