From Brooklyn Backyard to Cultural Movement: How Lovaeta K. Amoako Built LOCnificent Fest to Celebrate Black Hair and Joy

LOCnificent Fest is produced by Culture Unloc’d, a Brooklyn-based cultural events organization centered on black joy, diaspora identity, and community. Founded by Lovaeta K. Amoako, whose personal journey with locs began in 2010, the festival expresses her vision to create space where natural hair is not merely accepted—but celebrated.

What inspired you to found Culture Unloc’d and LOCnificent Fest, and what were the main challenges you faced?

I founded Culture Unloc’d and LOCnificent Fest out of a desire to celebrate locs, natural hair, and Black culture in a way that felt authentic, elevated, and community-driven. I wanted to create vibrant, high-energy spaces that honor our beauty and creativity while connecting people across the African diaspora through joy, storytelling, and shared experience. LOCnificent Fest began in a Brooklyn backyard in 2018 and has evolved into a two-day festival and cultural movement that amplifies the voices, businesses, and artistry of our community. The biggest challenges have been access to funding and resources. Producing large-scale cultural events independently requires wearing many hats—creative director, operations lead, marketer, and fundraiser all at once. Balancing the vision with the realities of budget, capacity, and sustainability has been a constant learning curve, but also an incredible journey in resilience and innovation.

Did you start the venture alone?

Yes, I started the venture on my own—driven by passion and purpose—but it has never been a solo effort. Over time, I’ve built a network of interns, volunteers, creative collaborators, and community partners who share the mission of celebrating locs, natural hair, and culture unapologetically. Every event is a reflection of that collective energy.

What's your business model, and how have you grown your revenue

Culture Unloc’d operates as a creative and cultural production studio that curates experiences, partnerships, and branded activations rooted in community impact. Our revenue streams include event ticketing, vendor fees, merchandise, sponsorships, and creative collaborations with brands that align with our values—such as Taliah Waajid and Locsanity.

Growth has come through consistency, authenticity, and relationships. Each year we refine our model, expand partnerships, and explore new ways to merge culture with commerce—whether through award programs, content collaborations, or curated brand activations that drive both visibility and value.
