Selling Without Becoming Someone You're Not: Moira Barnes on Sales for Female Founders

After more than 35 years in sales, including senior roles leading teams responsible for multi-million-pound revenues in the media industry, Moira Barnes saw how traditional sales approaches can leave people feeling pressured and uncomfortable, as though they had to become someone they weren't.

In 2018, she founded Moira Barnes Sales Consultancy & Training to help female founders sell in a way that feels natural, authentic and true to who they are. Her philosophy is simple: you can be commercially successful without being pushy or adopting someone else's sales style.

In this Q&A, Moira shares what led her to start her consultancy, how one client gained the clarity and confidence to expand into a larger studio and become fully booked months in advance, and her advice for women building a business around their own expertise.

Q: What led you to found Moira Barnes Sales Consultancy, and how does your background shape the way you help businesses approach sales?

I started my sales career at 16 and have spent more than 35 years in sales, working my way from the shop floor to senior leadership roles in the media industry, including leading teams responsible for multi-million-pound revenues.

I loved sales when it was about understanding people, building relationships and finding solutions. But I also saw how traditional sales approaches could leave people feeling uncomfortable, under pressure and as though they had to become someone they weren’t.

After having my first child through IVF, I returned to an inflexible corporate working pattern and found myself spending just 45 minutes a day with my daughter. It made me realise I wanted to build a different kind of working life.

In 2018, I founded Moira Barnes Sales Consultancy & Training, bringing my corporate sales experience to female founders who have incredible expertise but often struggle with selling themselves.

My philosophy is simple: selling shouldn’t require you to become someone you’re not. I help women find an approach that feels natural, authentic and aligned with who they are. It’s about building confidence, having better conversations and recognising that you can be commercially successful without becoming pushy or adopting someone else’s sales style.

Q: Can you share an example of a client where the right sales approach made a real difference to their growth?

One example that stands out is Angie at Pindrop Furnishings.

Sometimes, the biggest barrier to business growth isn’t a lack of expertise or opportunity. It’s having the space to step back, reflect and find the confidence to take the next step.

Through our work together, I helped Angie gain clarity about her next steps and the confidence to act on them. Since our sessions, she has expanded into a larger studio and brought on administrative support to help manage the growing demand. Pindrop is now fully booked months in advance.

What I love about Angie’s story is that the impact went beyond individual sales. She gained the confidence to make decisions that supported both her business growth and her capacity to manage it.

For me, that’s what effective sales support is about. It’s not about pushing people to sell harder. It’s about helping them recognise their potential, find an approach that works for them and feel confident enough to take action.

Angie summed up her experience beautifully:

“Moira’s help and support were invaluable. She was incredibly easy to talk to and created a space where I could properly reflect on things. Through our conversations, she helped me gain the confidence to do the things I needed to do and gave me real clarity about my next steps. Since our sessions, I’ve had the confidence to expand into a larger studio and bring on administrative support, which has helped me manage the demand as the business has grown to being fully booked months in advance.”

Q: What’s one piece of advice you’d give other women looking to build a consultancy around their own expertise?

Don’t underestimate the value of what you already know, and don’t feel you have to build your business by copying someone else’s version of success.

When you’ve spent years developing expertise, it can be surprisingly difficult to recognise just how valuable it is. You may assume everyone knows what you know, or feel you need another qualification before you’re ready to charge for your knowledge. Often, the real challenge is learning how to communicate that value and confidently invite people to invest in it.

Start by understanding the problems you can help people solve, who needs that help and how you want to work. Build a business that plays to your strengths and fits the life you want, rather than squeezing yourself into a model that doesn’t suit you.

And learn to sell. Not by becoming pushy or adopting someone else’s scripts, but by getting comfortable talking about the difference you can make.

You don’t have to become a different person to build a successful consultancy. You need to learn how to help the right people recognise the value you bring.
