Mafalda Carvalho on Growing Two Businesses Without Losing the Human Side of Leadership
Mafalda Carvalho spent years in adult social care leadership before founding Prestige Care Consulting and Rise & Bloom, two businesses built on the same core belief: organisations can have every policy and strategy in place, yet outcomes still hinge on how people experience leadership day to day. That gap between having a plan and actually living it out shaped what she now calls her "Human Side of Leadership" philosophy, one that treats trust, communication and emotional safety as just as central to good leadership as systems and performance.
Working across the UK, Portugal and Brazil has only deepened that view. Rather than offering one-size-fits-all advice, Mafalda draws on her operational grounding in the UK, her Portuguese instinct for relationship-led communication, and her growing work in Brazil to understand how differently people respond to authority, risk and opportunity depending on where they are. When she supports women building businesses, she starts not with tactics but with the person: what they are really trying to build, what is draining their energy, and where they are underestimating their own value.
That same grounded approach shapes the advice she gives most often to women balancing entrepreneurship with family and demanding careers: build a business that does not require you to abandon the life you are trying to improve. Below, Mafalda shares more on how her personal and professional experience converge, and why she believes sustainable growth is as much about clarity and capacity as it is about ambition.

Q: What led you to found Prestige Care Consulting and Rise & Bloom, and how does your “Human Side of Leadership” philosophy bring your professional and lived experience together?
Prestige Care Consulting grew out of years working in adult social care leadership, where I repeatedly saw the same gap: organisations could have policies, strategies and good intentions, but outcomes still depended on how people experienced leadership day to day. Culture, trust, communication, emotional safety and accountability were often the difference between a plan existing and a plan actually working.
That is where my “Human Side of Leadership” philosophy came from. I believe leadership is not only about systems and performance; it is also about understanding what people need in order to contribute well, take responsibility and sustain change.
Rise & Bloom came from the same belief, but from a more personal-development angle. It reflects the inward side of leadership: confidence, identity, wellbeing, self-awareness and growth. My professional experience and my lived experience have taught me that people do not leave their humanity at the door when they become leaders, founders, carers or professionals. The strongest development happens when we can hold ambition and humanity together.
Q: You work across the UK, Portugal, and Brazil, healthcare, leadership, and personal coaching. Can you share an example of how that range has shaped the way you support women building businesses?
Working across different cultures and sectors has made me much less interested in one-size-fits-all advice. The UK has shaped my operational and governance thinking; my Portuguese background keeps me connected to relationship-led communication and cultural nuance; and my growing work across wider Portuguese-speaking markets, including Brazil, has reinforced how differently people respond to authority, opportunity, confidence and risk.
So when I support women building businesses, I do not begin with “What should you post?” or “How do you scale?” I begin with: What are you actually trying to build? What constraints are real? What support system do you have? What is draining your energy? Where are you underestimating your value? Then we can connect strategy, visibility, boundaries, relationships and execution.
That range has taught me that sustainable growth is not simply commercial. It is also behavioural, relational and personal.
Q: What’s one piece of advice you’d give other women navigating entrepreneurship while balancing family and demanding careers?
Do not build a business that requires you to abandon the life you are trying to improve.
Ambition matters, but so do capacity, family, health, rest and the people who depend on us. I have learned to separate urgency from importance and to build around what is sustainable rather than constantly proving that I can carry more.
My advice would be: choose fewer things, do them properly, protect your energy, and let your business grow from clarity rather than pressure. You do not need to become less human to become more successful.
