Lucy Clifton of Spotlight Communications on Leading a Luxury Travel PR Agency in the AI Era

Lucy Clifton's path to the top of Spotlight Communications began in 1998, when she joined the then Prince of Wales's International Hotels Environment Initiative, an early introduction to luxury travel. It was there that she met the long-term business partner with whom she later founded Spotlight Communications. When her partner retired in December 2023, Lucy stepped up as CEO and owner, and the agency has since almost doubled in both team size and turnover.

Under her leadership, Spotlight has launched The Full Story, a research-led initiative examining who shapes what affluent travellers are told, and why. The findings show that editorial influence works at every stage of the UHNW decision-making journey, not only at awareness, and that PR strategies mapping placements to each stage are outperforming those that treat all coverage as equal.

In this interview, Lucy shares how AI is bringing PR and editorial closer together than ever, and why the qualities that make content readable for AI are the same ones that make good journalism. She also offers advice for women looking to build or take over an agency in a specialist industry: resist your inner critic, keep challenging your limits, and be open about what you are still working on.

Q: What led you to take the reins at Spotlight Communications, first as Managing Director and then as CEO and owner in 2024, after starting your career in bridal PR?

I actually started my career in 1998, working for the then Prince of Wales when he established the International Hotels Environment Initiative – a fascinating introduction to the world of luxury travel and also, my long-term business partner with whom I founded Spotlight Communications. When she retired in December 2023, it was a natural next step for me to take over the reins and I was more than ready to embrace the opportunity. I have a fabulous team at Spotlight and we have almost doubled in size and turnover since I became CEO.

Q: You've recently launched The Full Story and published research on how AI is reshaping visibility for luxury travel brands. What's the biggest shift you're seeing in how brands need to think about PR now?

The Full Story was launched following Spotlight's deep dive into understanding who is shaping what affluent travellers are being told …. and why. We realized that editorial influence operates at every stage of the UHNW decision-making journey - not just at awareness, and PR strategies that understand how to map placements to different stages of these stages are outperforming those that treat all coverage as equivalent awareness.

Interestingly, the structural conditions that make content AI-readable are also the conditions that make good journalism: clear format, genuine depth, regular publishing cadence, technical accessibility. Ultimately, the interests of PR and editorial are more aligned in the AI era than they have ever been.

Q: What's one piece of advice you'd give other women looking to build or take over an agency in a specialist industry like luxury travel?

The best advice I could possibly give is to resist your inner critic and keep challenging yourself. Rethink what you think are your limits, embrace growth and recognize the opportunities that can emerge when you are willing to move beyond what feels comfortable.

Leadership doesn't happen in isolation. In my experience, it happens through sustained growth, a clear vision and mission, and a distinct brand identity. Ultimately, it's about creating opportunities for others to join you.
