Alessia Frasson is the co-founder of [Uncommon Artwork](https://uncommonartwork.com/?ref=foundedbywomen.org), a platform that gives artists and small galleries an out-of-the-box way to show, sell and ship their work online without needing any technical skills. Based in Paris, she and her partner Cameron started by building an art site for themselves and ended up building the solution they saw so many artists missing.

In this Q&A, Alessia shares what led her to build software for artists and galleries, what artists most often struggle with when it comes to showing and selling their work online, and where Uncommon is heading next, along with candid advice for women thinking about building a startup.

Her perspective offers a refreshing look at why founders and artists have more in common than it seems, and why building a company is a lesson that nothing else can replace.

### Q: What made you start Uncommon Artwork, and why software for artists and galleries?

I am building the company that I wish existed in the world, and for myself.

I have been taking photos since I was a kid. Somewhere growing up I convinced myself it was a risky path, so I studied business administration and economics instead. While working in tech in my mid-20s, I had a deep crisis and understood that keeping art and photography on the side was not going to make me happy.

Right around this time, I met my partner Cameron, and we started making art exhibitions, selling photography and wooden lamps. My fire was burning again. We realised we wanted an online home for our work and, since we enjoy building things, we built it for ourselves: an art site, an exhibition page, a shop and more.

When we moved to Paris, we met many artists with the same need to showcase their art online, and especially to sell it. The art site we had made for ourselves was very similar to what they wanted, and artists usually do not have technical skills, let alone a digital team that can do it for them. Initially, we built a few custom art sites, but that was too expensive for 99% of artists. The same is true for small independent galleries.

That is when we started really working on Uncommon. We needed an affordable solution that could support artists like an assistant, with help on design and presentation, newsletters, selling and shipping. That is why we are building software for artists and galleries.

### Q: What do artists most often struggle with when it comes to showing and selling their work online?

I believe founders are artists, and artists are founders. Like every founder, an artist needs to take care of every aspect of a business: creating the product, marketing, presentation, selling and delivering their art. And very often they are one person only!

The first obstacle I always see is good photography of the artwork. It is not so difficult to overcome, but it is definitely a requirement for online sales. Luckily, the majority of artists manage to get representative pictures of their work and are ready to put it online and sell.

At this point they need a digital space to do it, at least a website and a shop. This is the obstacle I see most artists struggling with, losing their patience, and just giving up. I faced the same problem the first time I wanted to show my pictures and sell limited edition prints. I ended up with a simple portfolio and a form to contact me, and I have more technical experience than many artists!

Uncommon Artwork is the team artists do not have: an out-of-the-box solution for an artist or a small gallery to manage their art business, without any technical skills.

### Q: What's next for Uncommon Artwork, and what would you tell women thinking about building a startup?

The next step for Uncommon is to build a large community of artists and collectors, and truly make an impact. I want Uncommon to be a turning point in artists' careers, helping them move forward and make real progress. We focus on supporting each artist with an out-of-the-box solution to sell their art and unlock new ways to earn from it. We decided to make the platform free to use and take a small commission on online sales, because we want to grow alongside the artists we support.

As for advice to another woman, I think of it as speaking to my younger self. I would remind her that nothing can prepare you for building a company except doing it, and it's okay to feel lost sometimes. Iterate and iterate, speak to the people you want to support, keep experimenting and avoid assumptions. It's going to be worth it. Nothing else has taught me this much in so little time. I had to face every aspect of a business. I felt like on a rollercoaster, but most importantly I learned, and I am still learning, about myself.

It will feel lonely and foolish at times, so find a little community of people who understand you. Trust your own gut and judgment, because the people who try to drag you down are simply not worth your time. I've often been in rooms where I was the only woman, from being the first woman hired at a software startup to motorcycle lessons, and I never felt out of place.

I don't think of being a woman as a disadvantage. I think of it as another opportunity to turn in my favour. So be true to yourself, build confidence, and be bold. Don't let people define you, don't be afraid to ask, and support other people whenever you can. I think we'll reach equality this way.
